Noticeable in height and tall in stature, Mat spent most of his youth with MK City Youth as he developed a strong, brave, vocal and committed career as a solid, old fashioned centre-back.

After joining the squad in September 2009, Mat made his debut in the 8-1 victory over MKXI and featured in 5 consecutive games, starting all of them, before work commitments began to rule him out of proceedings on a fairly regular basis.  He returned in March 2010 to help FC MMIX progress through to the quarter-finals of the Supplementary Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over Inter Inchley, but broke his wrist shortly after and only featured one further time for MMIX – playing at the heart of the defence in a 13-0 pre-season victory over P+MM in August 2010 – before being released on a permanent basis shortly after.
